Quenching and Tempering of Machine Tool Castings
It is well known that the commonly used quenching media are brine, water, and oil. Workpieces quenched in brine readily achieve high hardness and a smooth surface, with a low tendency to develop soft spots due to insufficient hardening; however, such quenching often leads to severe distortion and even cracking. By contrast, oil as a quenching medium is suitable only for certain alloy steels with relatively high stability of supercooled austenite or for small-sized carbon steel workpieces.
